IBERO-AMERICAN ANIMATION QUIRINO AWARDS

OPEN THE CALL FOR ITS THIRD EDITION

  • Registration will be open until December 12th
  • The event will recognize Ibero-American animation in nine categories, including videogame animation for the first time

The Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards have opened the call for the several categories of its third edition, which will be held on April 16th, 17th and 18th 2020.

The initiative, which for the third consecutive year aims to value the Ibero-American animation talent and industry, receives animated works from the 23 countries of the region that have been premiered between January 1st 2019 and December 31th 2019. The call includes nine categories: feature film, series, short film, school short film, commissioned work, original sound and music design, visual development, animation design and – for the first time – video game animation.

Works whose original language is mostly Spanish, Portuguese or other non-hegemonic languages spoken in the Ibero-American region may apply. Works of Ibero-American producers that are made directly in other languages may also participate. The works must be submitted through the Festhome platform before December 12th at 23.59 (Spanish time).

Among all the submitted works, six titles will be nominated per category, which will be announced in early 2020. From among those selected, an international jury will choose three finalists in each category, which will be those that will qualify for the awards that will be delivered at the ceremony that will take place on April 18th.

In 2019, the Colombian feature film “Virus Tropical” by Santiago Caicedo, the Brazilian series “Irmão do Jorel – Seja Brócolis” by Juliano Enrico and the short film “Guaxuma” by the Brazilian Nara Normande, were the works recognized in the main categories.

In parallel to the awards, the organization seeks to continue generating networks and boosting the circulation of works on both sides of the ocean. For this, a new edition of the Ibero-American / World Co-production and Business Forum and the International Congress of Ibero-American Animation will be developed. Aimed at animation professionals, these activities will take place on April 17th and 18th and will bring together the animated sectors of Latin America, Portugal, Andorra and Spain. The second edition gathered together 300 professionals from 20 countries, who participated in more than 650 B2B meetings.

An active platform

Since its first edition in 2018, the Quirino Awards have become a reference platform for the promotion of Ibero-American animation and the meeting among professionals in the region. In 2019, the organization of the event was presenting the prizes and the Co-production Forum at the festivals of Annecy (France), Pixelatl (Mexico), Ventana Sur (Argentina) and 3D Wire (Spain). In addition, the organization is behind the launch of the Quirino Ibero-American White Paper. This publication, which is available for download in Spanish or English on Quirino Awards website, includes a database that includes animation associations, production companies, training centers and events in the 23 countries that comprise the Ibero-American region integrated by Latin America, Spain, Portugal and Andorra.

The Quirino are also part together with Pixelatl Festival (Mexico) and Animation! (Argentina) of La Liga de la Animación Iberoamericana, an alliance designed to promote projects in the region internationally. The winning project of the first La Liga call was ‘Two Little Birds’, a series co-produced by the Uruguayan Palermo Studio and the Argentine Can Can Club, and directed by Alfredo Soderguit and Alejo Schettini, which was presented, with the support of this alliance, at the Annecy and Pixelatl festivals.

Another of the initiatives supported by the Quirino is the CLAN Young Talent Award, an award organized together with the CLAN International RTVE channel to promote young Ibero-American creators. In its first edition, this contest of ideas for animated short films rewarded the project “Mundo menudo” by Irene Chica (Spain).

The next date where the Quirino Awards will participate is Animation! at Ventana Sur (Buenos Aires, December 2nd to 6th) where they will integrate a round table together with other representatives of animation industry events in which they will reflect on the state of the situation on Ibero-America and analyze new ways to continue promoting internationally to the region.

About the Quirino Awards

The awards are named after the creator of the first animated feature film in history, the Italian-Argentine Quirino Cristiani, who in 1917 directed “The Apostle”; an Argentine production in which 58,000 drawings made by hand and shot in 35 mm were used, in addition to several models representing public buildings and the streets of the city of Buenos Aires.

The initiative has the collaboration of ICAA, AECID, Ibermedia Program, Brazilian Hispanic Cultural Foundation, Embassy of Brazil, Embassy of Portugal and RTVE; and the support of DIBOOS, Pixelatl, 3D Wire, Ventana Sur Animation!, La Liga de la Animación Iberoamericana and Annecy Festival, as well as the associations: ABCA – Associação Brasileira de Cinema de Animação; APA – Association of Animation Producers of Córdoba Argentina; ANIMAR CLUSTER – Argentine Animation & VFX Cluster; Animachi Chile; GEMA Colombia – Animation Entrepreneurs Group; Gremio de Animadores de Ecuador; ACDMX – Association of Digital Creatives of Mexico; Peru Animation and Casa da Animaçao de Portugal.
